IISER Bhopal to Drill India’s First CO₂ Injection Well in Deccan Basalt
IISER Bhopal Leads India’s First CO₂ Injection Project in Basalt!
We are proud to announce that Dr. Jyotirmoy Mallik (Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at IISER Bhopal) has been awarded a prestigious project titled “Decarb Faroe” through the “Clean Energy Transition Partnership” (CETP) funded by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India.
Under this prestigious initiative, India’s first CO₂ injection well will be drilled in Deccan Basalt, led by IISER Bhopal and CSIR-NGRI. This marks a pioneering step in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the country by utilizing the potential of Deccan basalt formations, aligning with India’s net-zero goals by 2070 and global climate commitments.
The project sets the foundation for:
✅ Permanent CO₂ storage solutions
✅ Utilization of India’s volcanic formations for carbon sequestration
✅ Supporting India’s net-zero carbon goals by 2070
✅ Advancing sustainable solutions through geoscience innovation
Stay tuned for updates as we move toward sustainable decarbonization from the ground up!
